This is the practice of using thermal imaging camera devices to beam thermal energy on objects and scenes with the intention of ascertaining their properties and content. The images are captured by the thermal imaging cameras and displayed on the screen for further analysis.

Through several infrared light levels, they are able to reveal particular temperatures of different parts of the object. This is based on the concept that every object on planet earth emits some level of infrared light that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

The work of the thermal cameras captures this radiation in the form of infrared light and transforms it into an image that is visible to the naked eye. This image is known as a thermogram, while the process of analyzing it is known as thermography.

What Can Thermal Imaging Detect?

The thermal image system simply dictates the level of the radiation that emits from the body of the objects and analyzes it. This process has been employed in different sectors of life to ascertain the invisible components or properties of certain objects. This gives it wide coverage in almost all sectors, but it’s mostly used in the health sector. Here are a few conditions it can detect.


Thermography covers many areas. While you cannot use infrared imaging as an authoritative tool for cancer diagnosis, it can be used as a marker during risk assessment for breast cancer. It is one of the methods of detecting the presence of lumps, growths, and cancerous cells both in the breast and other parts of the body.


With thermal imaging, areas that have possible infections in the body could be detected. This is done by checking for areas of the body that have temperature profiles that could be interpreted as abnormal.

Blood Circulation Problems

With this imaging, the analysts can pick out the presence of certain circulation problems. These include conditions like deep vein thrombosis and others.

Muscle and Skeletal Issues

The thermal imaging system can come in handy when we want to find out if our skeleton and muscles are having issues. It is particularly beneficial in fishing out issues with the limbs, back, and neck.

Other Conditions

Other conditions that thermal imaging can detect in the body include carotid artery stenosis, dental irritation/inflammation, diabetes (secondary complications), hypesthesia, inflammation, ligament tears, nerve entrapment, neuropathy, paresthesia, rheumatoid arthritis, and synovitis. Health conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, tendonitis, sacroiliac syndrome, Raynaud’s disease, pinched nerves, and nerve root irritation can also be detected with thermal imaging.

While thermal imaging can work in other areas of our life, where it does the most beneficial work is in the health sector. That is why it is mostly associated with the medical field.
